AMU VC’s version on off campus branches questioned
18 June, 2010
Aligarh: The issue involving the opening of Aligarh Muslim University off campus branches at seven places in the country took a new twist with former Rajya Sabha MP Wasim Ahmed on Tuesday questioning the veracity of the claim of the AMU Vice Chancellor P K Abdul Azis that the decision to open special centres of the University was cleared by the governing bodies of the institution.
Ahmed, a former Congress MP, is the Visitor’s nominee to the Executive Council of AMU. He said what had “actually been cleared” at a meeting of the Council last year was the proposal to establish Centres for Advanced Studies and Research with the permission of the Visitor.
The former MP alleged that University officials are playing with the word Centre, and what is now being set up are de facto affiliated institutions of routine graduate studies.
Ahmad said that if the HRD Ministry probes the matter, the whole truth would come out.
The AMU Old Boys’ Association has also questioned the deciscion to open off campus branches and a case has also been filed in the Allahabad Bigh Court a few days back.
